Men's Shoes in Paris: Leave the Airport Trainer, Keep a Sole That Can Be Resoled

Updated: Sep 8
Look at men's feet at rush hour in Paris and you will see the same mistake in several sizes: a bright white performance trainer under cloth that is trying to be grown-up. The shoe shouts sport. The jacket whispers office. The outfit loses.
The correction is not a fragile dress shoe that dies in rain. It is a leather lace-up or loafer with a proper repairable sole, in black or dark brown, worn with trousers that have been hemmed to meet it.
What to buy
A plain oxford or derby in black for the darker half of the wardrobe. A dark brown loafer or derby for navy and grey. If you only buy one pair, buy black and keep it polished. Paris lighting is unkind to scuffed toe caps. Rubber studs on a leather sole help on wet stone. A full commando sole is optional. Foam running soles under a blazer remain a commuting compromise, not a style decision.
How to wear them
With tailored trousers, always. With dark rigid denim, yes. With shorts, no. With technical rain trousers, you have already chosen a different uniform. Socks should be dark and long enough that a seated crossing of legs does not reveal a slogan. This is unromantic advice and it still separates a composed outfit from a rushed one.
Care that is visible
Polish Sunday night. Use trees or stuff with paper so the leather does not collapse. Alternate pairs if you can. Take them to a cordonnier before the sole is a hole. Paris still has cobblers. Use them. A modest shine and resole on a decent shoe is a better upgrade than a fashion trainer that cannot be saved.
The exception
A dark, simple leather or canvas trainer with no blazing logo can work with knitwear and cotton trousers at the weekend. Keep it dark. Keep it clean. Do not wear it to a dinner that printed a dress code. If fashion week crowds tempt you toward an experimental shoe, try it for one evening and walk home. If your heel hurts on Rue de Rivoli, it is not an upgrade. It is content.
Monday test
Put on the jacket you already own, the new or newly polished shoe, and walk 20 minutes. If you arrive without thinking about your feet, the purchase worked.
