The Paris Menswear Edit: A Dark Jacket, a Better Trouser, a Shoe That Can Walk

Updated: Sep 8
Paris menswear in June sent colour down the catwalk: Celine, Comme des Garcons, Ami and Willy Chavarria all played with a brighter register for spring-summer 2027. September in the city is a different temperature. Offices reopen. Fashion week for women brings international buyers. The pavement uniform returns to navy, grey and black, with colour used as a signal rather than a theme.
An upgrade this month is not a new logo hoodie. It is a jacket that fits the shoulder, a trouser with a clean break, and a shoe that can cover the distance between a metro exit and a 9 p.m. dinner.
Start with the jacket
If the shoulder seam sits down the arm, the jacket is too big. If it bites the neck, it is too small. A tailor can move a button and take in a waist for less than the cost of a new designer piece. Do that first.
Cloth: mid-weight wool or a wool blend in navy or charcoal. Unstructured is fine for day. Add structure if you sit in meetings. Avoid shiny fabric. Paris light is grey. Shine reads as eveningwear at breakfast.
Trousers that change the outline
Wide is still acceptable if the shoe is solid. Skinny is finished. Aim for a straight or gently tapered leg that rests on the shoe without pooling. Hem them. Unhemmed fashion trousers are a fitting-room look, not a street look.
A second pair in stone or pale grey gives you a two-jacket wardrobe that appears larger than it is. Rotate with a dark denim that has no distress and no cartoon fade.
Shoes that survive the city
A black or dark brown leather lace-up, a loafer with a proper sole, or a clean dark trainer used only with casual cloth. White trainers with a navy suit still look like an airport. Polish once a week. Replace laces when they fray. These are small acts and they read immediately.
If you buy one pair before October, buy leather you can resole. Paris rain is not a season. It is a weekly event.
Colour, after June's shows
Take the cheerful June collections as permission for a knit in rust, bottle green or mid-blue, not as an order to wear head-to-toe brights. One coloured knit under a dark jacket is the adult version of that runway mood.
Watches, bags and glasses should be quieter than the knit. A slim bag that closes beats a shopper that announces gym clothes.
The 30-minute Saturday plan
Take two jackets and two trousers to a tailor with the shoes you actually wear. Ask for hem, waist and button. Budget the fee. Wear the result to work on Monday. That is an upgrade you will still have in March.
L'eclat Magazine will cover the next menswear week when it returns. Until then, the city itself is the fitting room.
