Euro Hits 17-Month Low as France's Finances Weigh on the Currency
A currency move with a Paris address
Paris, 5 October 2026. The euro slid to a 17-month low against the dollar, with traders citing high energy prices and concern over France's public finances, the Financial Times reported.
France is not the only weight on the single currency. It is the one markets named on Monday, after weeks of protest, a strained budget debate, and a far-left proposal to cancel bonds built up during European Central Bank bond buying.
What households feel
A weaker euro raises the cost of energy and imported goods priced in dollars. That feeds the same cost-of-living argument already in the streets outside French schools.
Economists have called the bond-cancellation idea unworkable. It remains part of the political argument investors are pricing.
